  • We always wondered what was the line between inspiration and theft. How much inspiration is considered a theft? Is it the picture that matters? Or the meaning behind it?

The Diversity

  • Being part of the design world for more than 10 years, we at RDL have seen new artists arise, new companies and agencies getting on top, and most importantly - new talents evolve. And as a company that values uniqueness and growth, we are proud of those who work hard to create something they can call theirs.

  • But, there is always a downside...

Yet, unfortunately, it is not always sunshine and rainbows. Even when the field is full of professionals who perform mastery, there will always be a villain. And you are ready for this conversation.

  • Modern design villains can be broken down into two categories:

    Vitalii B., UX Architect

    Vitalii B.

    UX Architect

    • the Ruthless Thieves

    • the Undercover (or not so much) Agents.

    • We have detected both “professionals” working in our field. Or, simply put, stealing and interpreting our original work.

    Ruthless Thieves

    • Ruthless Thieves are dangerous for the industry. They are not just annoying - they put both clients and other companies in potential danger. You may ask - why?

    Originality Destroyed

    • Top companies develop their style over time. It is not just about the pretty picture you see on Behance or Dribbble (we can’t miss a chance to promote our social media, follow us there!). All the companies follow a thorough process of idea gathering, countless moodboards, client meetings - getting to the core of the values and strategies that later reflect in the design. Ruthless Thieves only steal the final result - they don’t steal the idea behind it, the development and the thought.

    • Later, they promote other designer’s product as theirs, farming clients with a pretty picture. Because if you never knew how to bake a pie, you will never make it right by just looking at the picture of it.

    Effect on design space

    • This puts both clients and the original creators in danger - clients waste their resources for the product they will never receive, and creators lose clients who wanted their product.

    Undercover Agents

    • On the other hand, there are Undercover Agents. It is much harder to detect them, as they sometimes can be really good at their craft. However, at the end of the day, there will always be elements that reveal their evil intentions.

    • Details

Many Agents just interpret the general pattern of a design. They use the structure of our design, our metrics and elements, and change small details - like color scheme.

    • We like to joke around about it, because why not?

    • Let’s look at some examples. Or better - let’s play a game! You will try to guess which work is ours, and which is not. Let’s begin!

    Reveal...

    • Yeah, Figure A is by Rondesignlab. That one was easy, huh?
You can clearly see more dedication to the details and elements in our original work. And Figure B…it’s just…you know.

      Get ready for round 2!

    • This one honestly made us laugh a bit…but anyways. What’s your guess?

    Reveal...

    • Exactly, our work is under Figure B. It’s like some company trying to steal Apple’s design while avoiding getting sued. Like, seriously? You can clearly see the dedication to color and harmony between the elements in our work. The creator who interpreted our work did not know what the client wanted to show. The design of RDL is clean yet colorful and bright, and not…bland…

    • Alright, let’s move on. Last round!

    Reveal...

    • RDL’s work is…Figure A! Hope you guessed it right.
We can appreciate this work a little more, because the creator put their effort into it. As you can see, they changed the name of the company they allegedly did this work for. It helps them stay more under-cover, as it is harder for us to find. This is a smart move…and we are still smarter.

    • Main Difference

Unlike Ruthless Thieves, the Undercover Agents still don’t know how to bake a pie, but at least they baked buns before, so they are familiar with the baking process.

    Our response

    • Surely, we try to fight the crimes on the platforms. Customer support hates to see us coming again…However, we are little help in this giant stealing machine.  It’s always a surprise when we see another creator interpreting our work. We are used to it and have no hard feelings, but it does get stingy when they receive an achievement (you bet we fight for it to be ours)!

    • We create to inspire. The world of graphic design has become so big and flourished, blossoming with new faces and talents. And honestly, there is probably little to no new ideas that can evolve now - everything is a mix of something that has been done before. And it’s completely normal!

    • Everyone gathers ideas and inspiration, and adds their own twist to something that was already there. And that is exactly how uniqueness arises.

      Victoria P., Team Lead

      Team Lead

    • Our uniqueness is rooted in years of hard work and collectiveness of minds. Have you ever looked at brand logos and wondered how they were created? The principle is similar - you can only see the aftermath of hours of work put behind it. And when someone tries to copy it, that reminds us of the "Abibas" shoes on markets...

    • We don’t believe anyone can actually steal our work. They can always steal the picture, but in the bigger scene - it means nothing.

      Stan D., CIO

    • Most clients recognize our style, and seek the original every time they see something they like. There is nothing we can do with both Thieves and Agents. What we can do is continue creating and sharing our vision and ideas.

    Our Wish

    • And, we wish you upmost creativity and success in your whatabouts. We hope you don't resort to becoming a thief or an agent, because you now know it is no good. Keep your head high and reach for the stars!
