68% higher user engagement, 36% more regular users, SUS score 82. See how SparkCause rebuilt fundraising:
About the project
SparkCause simplifies fundraising by streamlining campaign creation and donation processes for users. The platform enhances engagement, making it easier for creators and supporters to connect.
Behind that promise sits a category with a specific failure mode. Most crowdfunding platforms treat the campaign creator as a technician who happens to care about a cause. Long forms, unclear payment flows, dashboards designed for internal ops teams rather than the person launching their first fundraiser. SparkCause was built to invert that assumption. The creator arrives with a mission, not a manual, and every interface decision follows from that starting point.
The design work spanned mobile and desktop as one continuous system rather than parallel builds. A peer-to-peer fundraising platform has to hold three audiences without picking a favorite: creators launching campaigns, donors giving small amounts across many causes, and organizations coordinating multi-campaign efforts. Each audience got a purpose-built path through the same underlying architecture, with donor management software UX decisions shaping how organizational users navigate their operational load without the friction that pushes them toward legacy tools.

Underneath the interface, Red Hat Display typography carries the trust signal that fundraising software needs but rarely earns. Bright accent colors mark actions worth taking without collapsing accessibility contrast. Every visual decision was measured against the same standard applied to FinTech UX design work: does this element move money faster, or does it introduce doubt at the moment doubt matters most.
The result reads as one working GoFundMe alternative built for teams that outgrew improvised solutions and need infrastructure that scales with the causes they support.
Strategic Plan
The strategy for SparkCause came out of one uncomfortable finding. Users across every audience segment said the same thing in different words: fundraising software wasn't hard because giving was hard, it was hard because the tools were built for someone else. Creators wanted campaign visibility. Donors wanted clarity. Organizations wanted mobile access that actually worked. Nobody was getting all three from the platforms they'd been using.
The response ran on four coordinated principles. Simplify campaign creation flows to the fewest possible steps between idea and live campaign. Structure donation journeys around the moment of decision rather than the moment of transaction. Prioritize mobile-first architecture because that's where the audience actually converts. Ensure competitive clarity at every entry point, because nonprofit software UX fails the moment a first-time user doubts what will happen when they tap the primary button.
Each principle came from a specific research finding, and each shaped a specific set of interface decisions downstream.
After reviewing competitors, we found out users seek clarity. Our strategy simplifies campaign creation and donation flows.

User Insights
Interviews with creators, donors, and organizational users surfaced friction across setup and donation flows. First-time campaign creators struggled to launch without abandonment. Donors hesitated at checkout when the interface introduced unfamiliar patterns. These signals shaped the SaaS analytics dashboard work that followed, particularly around donation feedback loops that keep contributors informed after their transaction completes.
62% – Filter
Users needed better tools to find and support the campaigns that matched their giving priorities, particularly within causes that carry emotional weight for specific communities.
48% – Checkout
Donation completion could improve, and the improvement lived in the last three screens where confidence matters more than any earlier design choice.
75% – Forms
Campaign creators reported the sharpest friction inside setup forms on existing crowdfunding tools. Three quarters of respondents flagging the same failure point is a mandate, not a preference.
Problem and solution
Fragmented interfaces and unclear donation journeys created exactly the kind of confusion that kills fundraising momentum. First-time campaign creators lost their thread halfway through setup. Donors abandoned checkout because the flow asked them to trust patterns they hadn't seen before. Every abandoned campaign carried a real cost, both to the creator who gave up and to the causes that never got funded.
Interviews revealed users abandon campaigns due to confusion, reducing engagement and success.
CIO
SparkCause removes entry barriers on both sides of the transaction. Campaign creators get a setup process short enough to complete in one sitting. Donors get a checkout flow that respects their intent from tap to confirmation. Both audiences meet inside a donation UX design system that treats trust as an interface property rather than a marketing claim.
01 – Easy setup supports long-term use
Step-by-step onboarding inside the mobile app removes the guesswork that kills first-time campaign completion. Retention follows setup completion, not the other way around.
02 – Consistent access across platforms
Multi-platform design keeps campaign management continuous across mobile and desktop, so users manage their fundraisers wherever they open the app rather than switching contexts to find the tools they need.
Mobile app
The SparkCause mobile interface handles the two moments that matter most in fundraising: creation and contribution. Both were reduced to the smallest possible number of taps without sacrificing the confidence checkpoints donors need before committing money. That reduction is where the mobile campaign builder UI discipline pays for itself.
Simplified layouts, clear action points, and streamlined onboarding shape every screen. Creating a campaign or making a donation now takes fewer taps than either action required on the previous version, and completion rates on mobile followed the reduction directly.
Guided Start
The onboarding screen carries users through campaign setup with clear steps and inline guidance, so first-time creators finish what they started rather than losing momentum three screens in.
Seamless Giving
Real-time tracking, frictionless donations, and intuitive campaign management sit inside one continuous surface, treating the entire giving flow as a single motion rather than a sequence of gates.
Insightful Metrics
The analytics screen tracks campaign performance and donor engagement with the specificity creators need to iterate mid-campaign rather than post-mortem.
System Usability Score
Post-launch usability testing returned a SUS score of 82, which sits inside the Excellent band and validates the interface decisions against real-world use. 72% of respondents gave positive answers. 7% were neutral or unsure. The rest offered specific feedback that shaped the next iteration cycle.
Group A – 42%
Did the platform provide clear guidance and feedback throughout your experience?
Group B – 76%
Was the platform's interface clear, easy to navigate, and simple to understand?
Group C – 94%
Did you find the fundraising campaign setup process intuitive and easy to complete?
Group C's 94% is the number worth studying. Campaign setup was the biggest failure mode on legacy platforms, and it became the clearest strength of the redesign. That inversion is what ux research actually delivers when it drives interface priority rather than confirms it.
Typography and color
Red Hat Display anchors the type system. It handles the range fundraising software demands: friendly enough for first-time campaign creators, precise enough for financial data, adaptable enough to hold up across mobile and desktop screens without losing personality.
Bright accent colors do the emotional work typography can't. They mark primary actions with the confidence that pulls hesitant users through moments of doubt. Contrast ratios stay inside accessibility standards, because a fundraising platform that fails color-blind donors loses causes they would otherwise support. The combination reinforces the SparkCause identity across every touchpoint, from campaign creation forms to donor confirmation screens.
Landing page
The landing page treats three audiences as separate entry paths inside a shared brand promise. Campaign creators need to understand how to launch. Donors need to understand how to give. Organizations need to understand how the platform holds up at scale. Each audience gets a distinct call-to-action anchored to their intent, with minimal distractions pulling attention away from the primary conversion path.
Testimonials from actual campaign creators sit beside real-time campaign highlights, building trust and urgency in the same visual moment. Mobile-first responsive layout keeps the experience consistent across every device the target audience opens the page on, which matters more than most landing pages acknowledge.
Result
Donor engagement rose significantly after the redesign shipped, and successful campaigns followed. The clearest indicators sit in daily platform activity: more creators launching campaigns to completion, more donors returning across multiple causes, and stronger community support inside the campaigns that would previously have stalled.
Your solutions transformed fundraising, boosted donor engagement, and strengthened community support effectively.

+68% increase in user engagement
Simplified donation flows, clearer CTAs, and better mobile usability drove the lift, all working together as one system rather than isolated optimizations.
+36% increase in the number of regular users
Consistent experience across platforms and improved onboarding produced return visits, which is the number that separates a fundraising tool users try from one they adopt.
Together those outcomes mark a real digital transformation of nonprofit fundraising infrastructure, moving the category out of legacy patterns and into a social impact SaaS posture the sector has needed for years.
Next steps
The next phase focuses on global localization and accessibility, extending multilingual support so campaigns can reach audiences beyond the platform's original English-speaking base. That expansion carries SparkCause into a community giving platform posture where the ecosystem grows through language rather than through feature accumulation.
Great progress! Next, let's focus on localizing the platform for global user accessibility.
