Soma UI – Brain Activity Monitoring App

  • What a competitive world we live in. Companies fight for the top spot, throwing cutting-edge hardware and innovative software at consumers. And guess who got a front-row ticket back in 2015? Us.

  • This journey represents a unique experience in our portfolio. We are entering the highly competitive landscape of flagship mobile operating systems. We had the opportunity to contribute to Huawei's strategic initiatives in this space.

Where the story took off

  • We were invited by Huawei, who were seriously flexing their muscles as a mobile powerhouse back then, to join them on a project that sounded both insane and utterly brilliant. Their objective? To forge an all-powerful, truly revolutionary operational system.

  • We were handed a blank canvas, a complete 0-100 initiative. Honestly, we were a little confused. Jared, one of the designers, remembers it something like that:

  • I never had a company give full creative freedom to us before that project. That was a hell of a stretch, to be fair. Me and the team had to meet up so many times cause every conference we would leave with our minds totally blank. It didn’t stop us though.

  • Designing an OS from scratch? That's not exactly typical Tuesday work. Huawei's team kept pointing out how much they were skyrocketing and how we were contributing to a product that was going to overthrow the competitors (okay, cocky).

  • Nonetheless, it was a gorgeous challenge that absolutely tested every ounce of our patience, market knowledge, and, let’s be real, completely exhausted us.

Main Task

  • Our core mission was pure creative freedom: deliver a highly usable and aesthetically stunning OS prototype. We were responsible for every single detail of the UI/UX, from individually sketching each icon to drawing up a massive collection of beautiful wallpapers.

  • Nights and days already turned into one big metaphysical mess, leaving us with no ideas, but as they say – teamwork is a dream work. We truly felt what it was like – uniting over ideas, which was kind of cool, not going to lie.

Components

  • To make sure this wasn't just a pretty novelty, we got serious. We started with a phase of market discovery. This was basically a highly detailed competitive analysis of all the big, established mobile OS platforms. We weren't just looking at them; we were dissecting them based on three traits:

  • Visual Appeal (Does it look good?)

  • Usability (Can a distracted person use it?)

  • Novelty (Is it boring?)

  • Our strategy was essentially to isolate every successful, revolutionary aspect that made a competitor shine, and then seamlessly and naturally implement a superior version of that idea into our design.

  • We didn't stop at the usual "light mode/dark mode" thing. We pushed for dynamic color systems that actually meant something.

Theme

  • Most of all, we loved our golden-black theme. Let us tell you, the whole team kept their heads up high when it was brought up. Like, “yeah, we did that, mhm.” Yeah, we are just like that.

  • Bringing luxury to your fingertips

The golden-black theme was a take on luxury rethought. This concept was designed to reflect premium status and sophistication but made simple and usable. Remember, we didn’t want to distract anyone from their goals. We ended up with an expensive-looking theme that was also helpful and not distracting.

Wallpapers

  • We had immense fun creating a unique set of six wallpapers that played masterfully with light, color, and depth. We called them things like Colorful Depth, Two Suns, and Black Light. They were designed to be perfectly unique and diverse, yet simple enough to avoid violently distracting the user from, you know, actually using their phone.

  • The final prototype was, for its time, truly revolutionary. We combined all the best parts of modern UI/UX design into one cohesive system.

    • Measurable results

Our successful cooperation with Huawei didn't just give them a flagship-worthy OS prototype; the design itself was so competitive that Huawei’s sales expectations saw a spike of 13% based on the visuals alone.

    • Personal outcome

But more importantly for us? It was a massive expansion of our own universe. It opened a significant space for us to investigate the high-demand field of OS Design.

    • We learned, we delivered, and now we know we can build the digital engine that runs the whole show. We stay on top of the news and keep imagining new trends, ensuring we never have to admit we're using last year's ideas.

    • And you…you can either stay on top of our news and be an observer, or…come talk to us and create your own beautiful product. The choice is yours. Bye for now!
