Credit Karma finance management system redesign — digital transformation in financial services for tax and credit UX
Credit Karma operates at the high-stakes intersection of fintech and personal finance, providing millions of users with a powerful digital gateway to their financial health.
As a leader in the tax intelligence and credit monitoring space, the company focuses on demystifying complex financial data through a user-centric, digital-native ecosystem.
By bridging the gap between rigid government systems and modern mobile experiences, Credit Karma has become an essential tool for taxpayers and financial advisors looking to navigate the complexities of the US financial regulatory landscape with clarity and speed.
Credit Karma bares immense responsibility in front of their customers, so upkeeping an image is essential.

Credit Karma legacy UI problems — rigid spreadsheet layouts and visual noise resolved through a ux audit checklist
Despite their decade-long presence in the industry, the company faced a significant hurdle: their platform’s user experience had become a barrier to growth.

The legacy UI/UX design was trapped in an outdated, "clunky" aesthetic that relied on rigid, spreadsheet-like layouts, making the already stressful process of tax monitoring feel even more overwhelming.
There were critical usability gaps in how complex data was presented; users struggled to navigate dense financial information, and the visual language lacked the professional, high-trust feel required for a premium fintech product.
To stay competitive, they needed to strip away the "visual noise," fix the fragmented navigation, and overhaul the entire interface to transform a confusing, data-heavy tool into a clear, sophisticated, and user-friendly financial dashboard.
We took on this task, starting with essentials - research and a plan.

To solve the platform's core complexity, we restructured the information architecture, converting dense, multi-page IRS tax transcripts into an intuitive central dashboard. We implemented a household management system that visually maps connections between primary taxpayers and dependents, and we introduced a mobile-first onboarding flow that breaks down the high-stakes "consent" and registration process into manageable steps.
Beyond the visuals, we significantly expanded the product's utility by proposing and designing an AI-driven insight engine. This system scans complex tax files to surface proactive recommendations, such as identifying missed payments or tax-saving opportunities.
We also redesigned their B2B partner tools, creating a robust pipeline for financial advisors to manage multiple "prospects" and households through clear, exportable PDF summaries and data-heavy tables that remain legible and professional.
This total transformation successfully bridged the gap between raw, overwhelming financial data and a seamless, high-fidelity user experience.

By replacing the stressful, "clunky" legacy interface with a clean and professional design, we shifted the user’s emotional journey from one of anxiety and confusion to a sense of total control and financial confidence.
The intuitive layout and proactive AI insights transform the daunting task of tax management into a transparent, high-trust experience that feels more like a supportive financial partnership than a rigid regulatory requirement.
